Dental Bonding

Dentist using a dental bonding light on a patient's mouth. Bonding, or composite filling, is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied to the tooth and exposed to a special type of light that functions to bond the material to the tooth. The procedure helps restore and improve the appearance of your teeth. The color of the natural tooth needs to be matched, hence dyes are also incorporated. Our cosmetic dentistry professionals are able to match the bonding to your natural tooth to ensure that you can smile once again with confidence. At Charlie Hsieh Dental Corporation, our dental team offers dental bonding to restore your smile.

Issues that Dental Bonding Resolve

If you experience pain, particularly after drinking hot or cold beverages, dental bonding can help fix this problem. Sensitive teeth are usually a sign of tooth decay. Bonding is used to fix defects or imperfections in teeth such as a chipped tooth, cracks in the tooth, or even tooth decay. Our cosmetic dentists can also use tooth bonding techniques to improve the general appearance of the tooth or make the tooth look longer in the case where one tooth is shorter than the rest. Dental bonding can also be done to close any space between teeth and change the shape of a tooth. If the root of a tooth has been exposed by a receding gum line, this procedure can also be used to cover the area.

The Advantages of Dental Bonding

Bonding is one of the easiest cosmetic dental procedures out there. It can often time be done with just one single office visit with the exception where many teeth are involved. A very small amount of the tooth enamel needs to be removed to undergo this procedure, unlike other cosmetic dental procedures. With the exception where it is being used to fill a cavity, anesthesia is oftentimes not needed for this procedure.

The Dental Bonding Procedure

The procedure can be broken down into two distinct stages - the first is preparation and the other is the bonding process. Very little goes into the preparation phase to ensure tooth bonding. In the case where tooth decay is being treated, anesthesia will be used. The tooth will need to be drilled to change its shape. This is also done in the case where the tooth has been chipped very close to the nerve. Using a shade guide, out cosmetic dentist will find a composite resin color that matches the natural color of your teeth.

Next, our dentist roughens the tooth surface before applying a conditioning liquid to ensure the process goes on well and enables the bonding material to stick firmly to the tooth. The tooth-colored resin is then taken and applied to the tooth. Molding and shaping to the expected shape are then done. Bright laser light is used to harden this material. After hardening has occurred, the tooth is further shaped and trimmed to match the other teeth closely. Buffing and shining to the appearance of the other teeth is also done to the surface. This procedure can take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.

Caring for Bonded Teeth

General dental care and hygiene can increase the life of a bonded tooth. Daily flossing and brushing at least twice every day is necessary. Avoid biting into hard foods and ice as much as possible. Do not bite your nails. For at least two days after the procedure is done, stay away from coffee, tea, tobacco, and any other teeth-staining food. Regular visits to our dental office for dental cleanings are also advised. Remember the bonding material is not as durable as real teeth and is subject to wear and damage.
