How Much Local History Do You Know?
Orange, CA, has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. In 1864, Los Angeles attorneys Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell purchased approximately 5,400 acres along the Santiago Creek, with Glassell also acquiring an additional 4,000-acre parcel where Costa Mesa now stands.
Water played a pivotal role in the selection of the location for their townsite, as Glassell needed a spot where he could irrigate crops, drawing water from the nearby Santa Ana Canyon. The fertile soil also contributed to the area’s appeal. Originally named Richland, the community was forced to change its name in 1873 after a postal application was rejected due to another town named Richland in Sacramento County. Undeterred, the community adopted the name “Orange.”
Orange officially became a city on April 6, 1888, and quickly gained recognition as the only city in Orange County planned around a central plaza, earning it the nickname “Plaza City.” The completion of the California Southern Railroad’s transcontinental line marked a significant milestone for Orange, making it the first town in the area to be served by the railroad. The town saw its first major growth spurt in the late 1800s, driven by the growing demand for California-grown citrus fruits, an era some refer to as the “Orange Era.”
As part of Southern California’s real estate boom of the late 1880s, the population of Orange expanded rapidly, with agriculture becoming the backbone of its economy. Growth continued steadily through the early 20th century, with a second real estate boom in the 1950s, spurred by the development of the regional freeway system connecting Los Angeles to surrounding areas like Orange. This growth resulted in large housing developments in the city, which continue today, albeit at a slower pace in the eastern part of the city.
