A Brief History of Villa Park

Villa Park’s story stretches back to the early 1800s, when the land was part of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, a massive Spanish land grant. Long before it became the close-knit city it is today, the area was known as Mountain View, named by the ranchers and farmers who settled here. When the community petitioned for its own post office, the name had to change since a town in Northern California already claimed “Mountain View.” The community settled on Villa Park instead, a name borrowed from a town in Illinois.

For decades, agriculture defined the area. Early growers cultivated grapes, walnuts, and apricots before citrus took over as the dominant crop for roughly sixty years. In 1912, local growers organized the Villa Park Orchards Association, an organization still operating in nearby Orange today. The ranching families who built this economy also established the Serrano Water District in 1876, which continues to supply the city’s water to this day.

By the early 1960s, Villa Park faced a turning point. The neighboring city of Orange was expanding, and many residents worried that annexation would bring higher-density housing to their rural community. Determined to protect their large lots and small-town character, residents voted for incorporation on January 3, 1962, officially becoming Orange County’s 24th city. That decision preserved the spacious, half-acre lots that still define Villa Park’s neighborhoods today.

Living and Working in Villa Park

Villa Park has earned its nickname, the Hidden Jewel, thanks to its peaceful streets, generous lot sizes, and strong sense of community. As the smallest city in Orange County, Villa Park offers a rare blend of small-town charm and big-city convenience, with quick access to major freeways and a short drive to job centers throughout the county.

Families are drawn to the area for its excellent schools within the Orange Unified School District, including Villa Park High School, Cerro Villa Middle School, and Serrano Elementary School. With consistently low crime rates and tree-lined residential streets, Villa Park remains one of the most desirable places to raise a family in Southern California.
